During the month of October, The Norwich Bulletin ran its fourth annual Creepy Tales contest, and St. Joseph School in North Grosvenordale took the opportunity to send some entries.  Lead on by our eighth grade Language Arts teacher, Ms. Lovrien, the St. Joseph kids submitted both stories and art work designed to creep out the judges, and they succeeded in a big way!

In what seems to be an unprecedented move, the artwork judge awarded two artworks first place!  Both Belle Mayo (8th grade) and Sage King are first place award winners for their superb artwork.

Rachel Jones was selected as the first place winner in the story contest for her creepy tale.  You can read it over and over again, and it will give you a chill every time.  It reminds me of those nights where I got the courage to look under the bed to make sure nothing is there...or is there.

And did I mention that all three of these girls are close freinds in the same small eighth grade class at St. Joseph School North Grosvenordale?  Congratulations to you kids who took the assignment seriously and are helping St. Joseph North Grosvenordale show all of Eastern Connecticut how much talent, exuberance and energy percolates here in our school and thanks to the great teachers who inspire these works!

The following is Rachel's first place story from the Norwich Bulletin's Creepy Tales Contest:

Grade 8

St. Joseph School

Simplicity. I went through an open window. I could hardly see, but I didn't need to. I knew where everything was. I made my way up, skipping steps that creaked. I crept down the hallway and up to the door with your drawings on it.

Only my shadow could be seen in the light of the small lamp. You had put it there for comfort but it couldn't keep back the demons of the night. Your breathing was loud and frightened. You knew I was there, but refused to believe it.

I could feel your fear crowding the room, wanting to escape. This time it wasn't your imagination. Slipping into your room, I hid at the foot of your bed. Slowly your breathing evened out as the fear dissolved. I started breathing hard wanting you to know I was there, wanting to feel your fear. You reached for a flashlight as I crawled under the bed.

I made a thumping noise and you jumped. The light clicked on and circled the room, examining every corner. You lowered yourself to peer under the bed. Your face appeared and the flashlight shone in mine. You never had time to scream.
