PreK is leaping into Spring by planting seeds. We compared corn, pea and bean seeds by size, color and feel. Next we planted them in dirt in our "see through" cups. By using see through cups we get to see the roots as they grow downward and the sprout as it grows up to the sunlight. We'll keep daily tabs to see how the seeds grow. We also put some seeds into plactic zip lock bags on a wet paper towel. This way we "trick" the seeds into thinking that they are planted and we get to see the seeds swell up as they absorb the water. This only works for a few days but it's enough for the children to get the idea of how a seed sprouts.
It gets really exciting when the plants get tall. In past years I've actually had bean and pea pods grow on our classroom plants. One year, one of the students took his plants home and planted them in his garden. He came into school the next year in September and gave me beans to eat that had grown on his bean plant!!
